Paragraph: Belo Monte is the name of a hydroelectric installation built in Altamira (Brazil), which dams the waters of the Xingu River, one of the major contributing streams to the Amazon River. Already planned in the 1970s the project was dismissed due to serious concerns about its negative impact on the environment and the population. Despite these concerns the project was once again put on the agenda and construction began in 2011. Although it was interrupted several times by court orders, due to wilful disregard of environmental and social specifications, the first turbine started service in 2016. The work “Belo Monte” is a photographic story about the people of Altamira and the effects on them and the environment caused by this project. A story that in the future may well recur elsewhere in the Amazon Basin since there is a large number of similar projects already planned.
